What we’ll talk about
Rasayana is a natural supplement that has a broad spectrum of positive effects on health, psyche, cognition, digestion, physical performance, and the circulatory system. Rasayans action is mostly epigenetic, that means they can turn on and off genes, which then synthesize proteins, enzymes and hormones. According to Ayurveda, Rasayans are suitable during difficult life events:. It is beneficial to use them for a long time to maintain good health, mental resilience, as an additional help to the treatment of specific health problems.
“Rasayan has incredible power:
Prolongs nourishment and contributes to health, maintains youth and brings vitality.
Strengthens memory and spirit, improves appearance and voice and gives them inner and outer shine”.
Wise Charaka
Rasayana is a natural supplement that has a broad spectrum of positive effects on health, psyche, cognition, digestion, physical performance, and the circulatory system. It helps regulate biochemical processes, metabolism, and detoxification, build tissues (skin and muscle) and positively affects the nervous system and memory.
The concept of rasayana comes from Ayurveda literature, where the application of herbs has been used as corner stone in various diseases. In this article, I refer them as natural substances and their extracts. They stand above all other natural substances/plants with their ability to affect all body systems and different levels of our health. Rasayans action is mostly epigenetic, that means they can turn on and off genes, which then synthesize proteins, enzymes and hormones.
What’s more, their effect is selective, they only work where they are needed. But what does that means? For example, if you are using pharmaceuticals for diabetes, it may cause overregulation of thyroid gland (which may cause serious health issues). On the other hand, rasayans will not over/under-regulate or affect body function that are normal. Combined with a good diet and lifestyle, they can lead to better health, greater muscle regeneration, better cognitive and physical performance, and even slower aging.
True Rasayans are:
- Ashwagandha
- Indian gooseberry
- Brahmi
- Guduchi
- Shatavri
- Bhibitaki
True rasayans have been used since ancient times, they undoubtedly have a positive effect on the body. Just because they are used for such a long time, it does not mean they have the greatest effects. For this reason, I would like to present you different natural substances that could undoubtedly be included in the rasayans, with great influence on a body and their positive effect is based on scientific studies.
Rasayans of 21st century
These natural substances have a truly spectrum-wide positive effect on health, prevention of civilization diseases or even cancer. You can use them on a daily basis, for a long period of time as a prevention, for the optimization of individual body functions and/or for long-term sustainable health.
Those are:
- Resveratrol
- Green tea
- Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG)
- Curcumin
- Sulforaphan
- Wine
There are many other natural substances that have a highly positive effect on the body – such as pomegranate or ashwagandha, but their effect is mainly on specific health aspects (performance and stress). For this reason they are not classified among the Rasayans.
When Rasayans should be used?
According to Ayurveda, Rasayans are suitable during difficult life events:
- High workload
- Pregnancy or operation
- End of relationship
- Winter
- High physical load
- Trauma
It is beneficial to use them for a long time to maintain good health, mental resilience, as an additional help to the treatment of specific health problems (diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer) or to improve physical and mental performance.
Each person has one primary and one secondary type of rasayans which have usually the best effect. It is partly based on where you live, genes but also your personality. It is important to not to use too many of them at once. Rasayans are suitable to use alone or in combination of two (green tea + EGCG, wine + resveratrol).
Personally, I would recommend reading a separate article for each of them, and then choose which one you think is most useful for you. Another option is to try them all, one by one and observe their effect on your body and eventually find which one suits you best.
